The campaign orchestrated by the Nacionalista Party proved to be successful as 
Ferdinand  Marcos and his running mate Fernando Lopez were elected in 1965 
as President and Vice President of the country.

During his first term in office Pres. Marcos decided to host the Manila Summit Conference of 1966, inviting delegates 
from seven nations. The purpose of the Summit was for the Philippines to have economic cooperation
with Australia, South Korea, United States, New Zeland, Vietnam and Thailand.
